A jury awarded $3.9 million to the family of a man who died in a crash with a large waste disposal truck. In 2006, Scott Ryan Eisenbrandt, 20, struck an unflagged metal extrusion from the back of a slow-moving truck that he was trying to pass. His newlywed wife sued the truck driver and several business entities for its uninspected truck that had so many vehicle code violations that its operation on California roadways was unlawful. The defendants asserted that the truck was properly maintained and operated. They blamed the accident on Eisenbrandt's negligence.
