A woman who sustained a traumatic brain injury in a broadside crash with an off-duty Broward County Sheriff's deputy was awarded $8.8 million. In 2009, Deyanira Amaro, then 24, was struck by Kerwayne Clough. The defendant never answered the complaint and the case proceeded in default. Amaro was in a coma for two weeks. She underwent a craniotomy to relieve pressure on her brain. A single mother, Amaro was working and going to school prior to the accident. She had to quit school and move in with her mother, noting that she has problems with memory, reasoning and executive functions, often losing her train of thought.
