The family of a man who was killed while crossing a highway recovered $1 million. In 2007, Vashawn L. Brinson, 30, crossed Interstate 75 when his car broke down in the emergency lane. He was struck by a truck driven by Richard King and owned by Landstar Trucking. Plaintiff's counsel presented an expert who said King was driving 76 mph in a 70-mph zone. Brinson was thrown 233 feet and was struck by two cars. A police investigator described the accident as one of the worst he had ever seen. Brinson was found 50 percent liable, which reduced the jury's $2 million award.
