A jury awarded $1,253,959 to an oil rig worker who claimed he sustained career-ending injuries in a collision with a bus. In 2007, Jesse James Gutierrez alleged that Jose Juan Betancourt, driving a Wackenhut Corporation bus, made a sudden left turn into his lane. Gutierrez was unable to stop in time to avoid striking the back of the bus. He sustained a ruptured disc at L5-S1 and underwent three surgeries in 2009. He claimed he has not been able to return to his previous job since the accident. He sued Betancourt and Wackenhut for $1.5 million in damages. The defendants argued that Gutierrez was driving too fast for the rainy conditions and that he had ample time to slow down before striking the bus. They also contended that Gutierrez was more than capable of working so long as the job didn't require heavy lifting or repetitive bending.
